Through this event it is possible for you to establish valuable contacts with relevant Chinese stakeholders.

Opportunities for Sino-Dutch cooperation

China and the Netherlands are very different, but they are similar in respect of the importance on inland shipping for the national economy. In both countries inland shipping is an significant way of shipping goods, it’s important for the economy of the both countries. And they will be key in de future too, since inland shipping in itself is more sustainable then alternatives like trucking.

Nevertheless, inland shipping will have to become more sustainable in the very near future, to meet the expectance of the public and meet sustainability goals. In this, technical innovation plays an important role. Developments like new types of fuel, new hull design and other improvements are necessary to make shipping more sustainable and even emission free. In more efficient sailing to reduce waiting energy, digitalization of navigation tasks also plays an important role.

Future demographics are a threat however, in China and the Netherlands alike. With the existing population of crews becoming older and a shortage of new well trained youth, shipping has to become more attractive and less labor intensive in the next decades. Here digitalization might come to a help by automating navigational and other tasks aboard inland barges.

In the next decades, inland shipping will be redesigned. In few other countries, the importance of inland shipping is not very high. That’s why, even considering that we are located in other parts of world, cooperation on inland shipping is important for both China as the Netherlands, for governments as well as private companies.
